Thanks to President Emeritus of our Club, B.R. Rolya, we began Dog Friendly Ratings several years ago, to answer the question, how well do the listed bars welcome man's best friend? I was later to update it from a more personal perspective when I acquired a bar hound of mine own, Ludwig, Überdachshund, who has helped me immeasurably in researching the subject, and was eventually aided by my second dog, Sophie who is a poodle. Unforunately, Ludwig passed away in May of 2009, but Sophie still enjoys pub crawling in NYC's finest bars. Please note, however, that we rarely rate bars that also serve food, as silly New York health laws simply do not allow canines in places where food is served, despite the fact that some dogs are cleaner than some bar patrons. It should be noted also that according to NYC law, ICE is regarded as food. Read between the lines, and you will understand what this means. So if brave bar owners choose to allow your dog to hang out with you in their bar, they deserve our thanks. For that reason, I am not going to give a bad dog-friendly rating to bars that are not dog-friendly; I'm only going to mention the ones that are. I have recently (May 2010) created a Google Map for Dog-friendly bars, using some of the same information as here. It is located at this link. We often get emails asking where to buy homebrew supplies in New York City. For years, we had to say there were no homebrew supplies store in New York, but recently we have gone from famine to feast as there are 2 homebrew stores in Brookyn:

In general, beers are listed in either alphabetical order. I decided I no longer want to make judgements on quality or rarity; I'll let you do that.

Bar Hours. As of September 15, 2007, I have tried to add the hours of operation to as many bars as I could. I either used the hours listed at the bars' own website, or the hours I could find on Citysearch. If their are any errors, please let me know via email.

The are more detailed and high-tech then my one-man listing here, but they do not have the same bars or the hardcore beer geek orientation we have. But they updates there more often then I do, and it is always worth checking their site for the latest information.

A great bar in the happening neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Very nice selection of 24 micros, including a lot of really excellent choices, and periodic special events. The people who work here are both extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. $1 off happy hour 5:00-8:00 p.m. Dog-friendly rating: 4 bones. Ludwig and Sophie practically have their own stools there, and get along fine with Barcade's own mascot, Teddie, who is a very friendly dog.

Excellent beer bar in the burgeoning Park Slope beer bar scene. A small, but excellently chosen selection of drafts and casks, some nice cheeses and other snacks, and an excellent atmosphere.

Black Rabbit, 91 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222. Hours: Monday-Friday: 4:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Saturday-Sunday: 12:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Telephone: 718-349-1595. Website: http://www.blackrabbitbar.com/. I haven't been there yet, but have this description: Nice looking pub on Greenpoint. Dutch door in the front looking in on the place. Dark wood bar and booths that have swinging doors to give the people who are sitting in the booth some privacy

The Bodega, 24 Saint Nicholas Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11237. Phone: 646-924-8488. Hours: Mon-Thu 5:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m., Fri, Sat 5:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m., Sun 5:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. New (Spring 2010) bar in Bushwick, with a very good mostly Belgian bottle selection and some very nice bottles. Also very nice wines if you are interested.

Boulevard Tavern, 579 Meeker Ave Between N. Henry and Monitor St. Brooklyn, NY 11222. Telephone: 718-389-3252. Hours: Daily: 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Website: http://www.myspace.com/boulevardtavern This is a restored 80 year old bar with 12 drafts, micros and some imports, not a beer geek selection, but some good choices, and among the bottles is such interesting stuff as Westmalle Tripel, Maudite, Fin du Monde and Aventinus. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones. The two dogs are always welcome here, and they get water and treats every visit.

The Brazen Head, 228 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Telephone: 718-488-0430. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 12:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m., Sunday-Monday 12:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. Website: http://www.brazenheadbrooklyn.com. Beer bar with a good selection of drafts. They follow the policy of dating the tap selections, as DBA's does, which is a good idea. The always have at least 1 cask up and have done several cask festivals, always organized by the Gotham Imbiber, Alex Hall.

Brooklyn Ale House, 103 Berry Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211, Telephone: 718-302-9811. Hours: Daily 3:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. A local Williamsburg bar, with 14 drafts and some bottles, including some interesting items. Really not a beer geek place, but it is very comfortable and friendly, usually has a few worthwhile beers (even more so recently), and is incredibly dogfiriendly. Both of my dogs are always welcome, and it was actually Ludwig's first beer bar to visit as my dog. 4 bones.

Browerij Lane, 78 Greenpoint Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 112222. Monday-Thursday: 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Friday-Sunday: 12:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m . Excellent beer store in Brooklyn with events and growlers to got. Phone: (347) 529-6133. Website: www.brouwerijlane.com.

Cherry Tree, 265 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217, (718) 399-1353.Another bar in the increasingly-crowded good-beer neighborhood of Park Slope. Good selection, and also food.

Chip Shop, 129 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Telephone: 718-855-7775. Hours: Monday-Wednesday 12:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Thursday-Friday 12:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m., Sunday 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.website: http://www.atlanticchipshop.blogspot.com/ A English-style Fish & Chips place, with a conservative list of drafts, with usually several interesting items (which seem to be getting better lately, in early 2007), and a few good bottles. For a beer geek, this is not worth going out of your way to visit, but as it is just down the street from Waterfront and Brazen Head, it does make for a nice pub crawl.

d.b.a. Brooklyn, 113 N. 7th St. (Berry St. & Wythe Ave.) Brooklyn, NY. Telephone: 718-218-6996. Hours to follow. New (open 11/29/08) Williamsburg beer bar is a sister bar to the long-established East Village bar. 16 drafts, with a good selection, all micros, some very good bottles as well. Off to a great start. Boy, these days to do pub crawl in this neighborhood is going to be a multi-day event! Dogfriendly rating: 4 bones. Both my dogs stopped in for opening night and were welcomed with open arms. .

They have 8 drafts, and weekly gravity casks. $2 off happy hour 5-7:00 p.m. They have approximately 50 bottles, including a section of session beers, and to my great interest, Val Dieu, Rochefort 6, Saison Pripaix, several De Dolle beers, J.W. Lee's Harvest, Gale's Prize Old Ale, and A. Le Cocq's Extra Double Stout.. Click here for draft list

The Double Windsor, 210 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY, Phone: 347-725-3479. Hours: Mon-Thu 3 pm-2 am, Fri 3 pm-4 am, Sat 12 pm-4 am, Sun 12 pm-2 am. A very nice bar in Park Slope, with a comfortable atmsophere, a good selection of draft beers and also food.

Downtown Bar & Grill,160 Court Street Brooklyn, New York, 11201. Telephone: 718-625-2835. Hours: Monday-Sunday: 12:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. An irmpessive selection of over 400 bottles and a dozen or so drafts. Regular and upscale food, nice room. Located between American Beer and Brazen Head, check it out next time you're in the neighborhood. Dogfriendly rating: 3 bones. They have an outdoor area to bring your dogs in nice weather, and are happy to supply water.

Fette Sau, 354 Metropolitan Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11211, 718-963-3404.Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 5:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m.; Friday-Saturday, 5:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. From the folks who brought you Spuyten Duyvil (across the street) a barbecue place with all sorts of meat and a few interesting draft-only microwbrews. Not really a beer destination per se, but if you're at Spuyten and getting hungry for some solids....

4th Ave Pub, 76 4th Avenue (between Bergen and St. Marks) Brooklyn, New York, 11217. Telephone: 718-643-2235. Hours: Daily: 4:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Typical L-shaped bar with a mirror, tables, and some comfy chairs and a couch in the back-a very comfortable place with a nice feel.. This place has an especially adventurous selection of both draft and bottles, Seating out back for 30.

The Gate, 321 5th Ave., Brooklyn (Near Third Street). Telephone: 718-768-4329. Hours: Monday-Friday: 3:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m., Saturday-Sunday: 1:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m.Website: http://thegatebrooklyn.blogspot.com/ Very comfortable and fun bar with a good juke box, brick walls, a variety of tables ranging from wooden barrels to big picnic benches, and a very good draft selection. Often have beer events here as well. Dog-friendly rating: 4 bones. Dogs have been sited in abundance on some nights.

The Gutter, 200 N. 14 Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Telephone: 718-387-3585. Hours: Monday-Thursday 4:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. and Friday-Sunday 12:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. From the same folks that brought you Barcade, is another unusually-themed bar. This place has apparently the first bowling alley in Brooklyn NY in about 50 years. It also has a very cool, lodge-like bar area, that is totally separate from the bowling alley. The bar feels like it's been around forever, in a very good way, but it is a totally new construction in a former factory building. It's a slightly isolated area on the tip of Williamsburg, but give them a few years as they are near the waterfront and that area will be hopping. They are also about a five minute walk from the Diamond, so we are talking about good pubcrawl material here. The draft list is at present 12 taps, and more conservative than a beer geek like me would like, but the place is so wonderful that I am cutting them some slack; anyway, they have about 5 or 6 large bottles, including some very unusual stuff. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones. The dogs are not allowed in the alleys, for obvious reasons, but they can hang out in the bar area and are treated well, as would be expected from Barcade folks.

The Habitat, 988 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222 718-383-5615, website: http://www.thehabitatbrooklyn.com/index.html. Hours: 2:00 p.m. on, Saturday and Sunday, 4:00 p.m. on, Monday-Friday. Brand new (April 2008) addition to the Greenpoint good beer bar scene. 12 drafts of well-selected craft beers, some bottles, and food. A place to watch.

Harefield Road, 769 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Telephone: 718-388-6870. Hours: 12:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Another Williamsburg additon, this is an English pub-style bar with about 20 taps, mostly micros, though the choices could be a little more adventurous than they are. Brick walls, dark rough-hewn benches and ceiling adds lots of atmosphere. Dog friendly rating: There have been dogs sited there recently, so I'll have to bring mine back there to see what's what. No recent draft list.

Henry Street Ale House, 62 Henry St. (between Orange and Cranberry), Brookyn, NY. Telephone: 718-522-4801 Hours: Monday-Friday 4:00 p.m.-on, Saturday-Sunday 12:00 p.m.-on.Was a branch of Park Slope Brewery. A neighborhood joint serving more than just pub food. Dog-friendly rating: 4 bones. I have not brought them there yet, but I have been informed that they like dogs there.

Legion, 790 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211. At the location of the former Pourhouse, with a better draft selection than that place ever had. A nice, comfortable bar with cushy booths and brick walls. 10 drafts, and 2 handpumps.

Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten, 64 Frost Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211 (near BQE), Telephone (718) 253-7077. New (summer 2010) Williamsburg, Brooklyn branch of the German restaurant. Similiar selection of beer and food, nice outdoor seating area in a former gas station.

Luckydog, (formerly Wells Ales and Lagers and then Lenora's Way) 302 Bedford Avenue (between South 1rst This bar is has gone through some changes. Reopening in August 2009, they have a good draft selection, including casks, and are extremely comfortable with a nice back yard. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones. With a name like that, what would you expect?.

The Levee, 212 Berry St., (on North Third), Brooklyn, NY 11211. Telephone: 718-218-8787. Hours: Daily: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Website: http://www.theleveenyc.com/ Another fine Williamsburg bar. A small but decent draft list, and a good bottle selection, including such unusual selections as Achel Brune, Delirum Tremens, Dogfish 90 Minute IPA, Blithering Idiot. Also, great people running the place, which has a very friendly feeling. Dog-friendly rating: 4 bones. Sophie made her introduction to the Williamburg bar scene at this place, just a couple of blocks from the shelter she was adopted from, and her and Ludwig have always been made to feel welcome.

The Mark Bar, 1025 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222. Telephone: 718-718-349-2340. Hours: 4:00 p.m. to 4 :00 a.m. every day. Website: http://www.themarkbar.com/. This bar, located in Greenpoint, has 14 draft lines with a good mixture of micros, and a very good bottle collection. They also now often have a cask pin at the bar. Their happy hour ($1 off) is 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., every day of the week. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones. They are happy to welcome canines there.

Matchless, 557 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222. Telephone: 718-718-383-5333. Website: http://www.barmatchless.com/index.html (please note, the draft list on the site is at least 3 years old!). Hours 6:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m, every day. Another member of the Greenpoint/Williamsburg beer bar scene! 15 drafts, including some good micros and imports and some bottled beers. Excellent happy hour 6-8 p.m.: buy one draft, get one free. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones! They are very dog-friendly and Ludwig and Sophie are always welcome.

Matt Torrey's, 46 Bushwick Avenue (Corner Ainslie Street), (718) 218-7646. New (March 2010) beer bar in Williamsburg, from the owners of Harefield Road around the corner. Nice selection of New York state draft craft beers, and very good bottles.

Mission Dolores, 249 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 718-399-0099. New (March 2010) Beer Hall in Park Slope. Further info shortly.

Mugs Ale House, 125 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211.Telephone: 718-486-8232. Hours: Monday-Friday 2:00 p.m -4:00 a.m. Saturday-Sunday: 11:00 a.m.-4:00 a.m. Food is served. Web page: mugsalehouse.com. The original Williamsburg beer bar, open a decade before the others. Over 2 dozen taps, at least 1 hand-pump during cooler weather. Happy hour 5-7. (50 cents off all drafts-but their regular prices are lower than most, anyway!) Hosts monthly meetings of the Malted Barley Appreciation Society (that's us!) The bottle list is pretty extensive and includes many vintage beers, but it is currently out of date. Dog friendly rating: 1 and a half bones: Dogs are not allowed in the bar, as it is also a restaurant, but if the weather is nice, and the back patio is open, you can tie your dog to the fence and sit at the patio.

Pacific Standard, 82 Fourth Avenue (between St. Mark's and Bergen), Brooklyn, NY 11217. Telephone: 718-858-1951 Hours: Monday-Friday 4:00 p.m.-4:00 am, Saturday-Sunday 12:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m.Website :www.pacificstandardbrooklyn.com In Park Slope, in prime pub crawl territory, a very nice-looking place, with a West Coast theme. 14 drafts, mostly West Coast and local beers. Also a cask will follow soon, and some bottles. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones. My two dogs were there and enjoyed themselves very much.

Pencil Factory, 142 Franklin St.(at Greenpoint Ave), Brooklyn, NY 11222. Telephone: 718-609-5858. Hours: 3:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Monday-Friday, 1:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Saturday-Sunday. A fairly well established Williamsburg bar with 22 taps, and while they could be a bit more adventuresome, there is always something good to drink here. Very comfortable pub atmosphere, with lots of unpainted wood and nice large benches. Dog friendly rating: 2 bones. Dogs are welcomed at the outside tables, but not inside the bar. .

Radegast Hall & Biergarten, 113 N 3rd Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY 11211 • 718.963.3973. Hours: 3 PM to 4 AM Kitchen: 4 PM to 11:30 PM Grill: 3 PM to 2 AM. Wonderfully atmospheric European-style beer hall and restaurant. Excellent food, drafts include some good choices from German, the Czech Republic Austria, with one beer from Belgium. The bottle list is a little more venturesome, with multiple beers from the same coutnries. Another fine edition to the neighborhood...pub crawls here are becoming major undertakings!

reBar at Retreat, 147 Front St. (between Jay and Pearl), Brooklyn, 11201. Telephone: 718-797-2322, Hours: Monday-Wednesday: 11:00 a.m-2:00 a.m., Thurday-Saturday 11:00 a.m.-4:00 a.m., Sunday 2:00 p.m. -2:00 a.m. Fifteen drafts with a very nice selection. I have not been there yet, but described as follows in their website (http://www.rebarnyc.com/): "Reclaimed factory loft space with terra cotta barrel-vaulted ceilings (12 1/2 feet high), stately columns, detailed iron and steel gates, unmilled hardwood bar and harvest table, antique tulip chandeliers and stained glass windows."

South Fourth, 90 South Fourth Street (at Berry), Brooklyn, NY 11211. Telephone: 718-218-7478. Hours: Monday-Friday: 8:00 a.m.(!)-4:00 a.m., Saturday-Sunday: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 a.m. Website: http://www.south4thbar.com/ With this late 2006 addition, Williamsburg good beer bar scene finally invaded the south side of the neighborhood. A small, comfortable bar, with about a dozen taps, a mixture of micro brews including some adventurous choices. Dog friendly rating: 4 bones. When you see a dog water bowl in front of the bar, you know you’re in for a dog welcoming place.

Spikehill, 184 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Telephone: 718-218-9737. Hours: Sunday-Thursday 12:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m., Friday-Saturday 12:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Another fine addition to the burgeoning scene of good beer bars in Williamsburg, Spikehill (and yes, it's supposed to be one word), right on the main drag and half a block from the Bedford Avenue Subway stop, is a classy dark wood bar with a decent selection of a dozen drafts, and an excellent selection of bottles: 60 beers, including favorites such as St. Bernardus 12, Unibroue Terrible, Skullsplitter, Old Stock, Old Rasputin, a couple of Dogfish beers, Gaffel Kolsch, Bezelbuth, and others. Prices are quite good for the area as well. Lots of whiskeys too if you're looking for them. In the past they let Ludwig here, but as they have opened a kitchen, I am keeping my fingers crossed for our next visit..

Spuyten Duyvil, 359 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Telephone: 718-963-4140. Hours: 5:00 pm on, every day. Website: http://www.spuytenduyvilnyc.com/ Wonderful bar in Williamburg, Brooklyn. A small, but extremely well-chosen selection of drafts (including 1 cask ale), and a great selection of about 100 bottles including the best beers from all over the world, and absolutely no mediocre beers. You can't get much better than this. The Belgian section is organized into Flemish, Wallonian and Lambic beers!! 200 Fifth, 200 5th Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn (at Union St.). 718-638-2925. Hours: Daily 4:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. Website: http://www.200-fifth.com/ Pleasant bar in a nice neighborhood. There are quite a few taps, but the selection could be better. A few too many TV sets for my comfort level..

Waterfront Ale House, 155 Atlantic Avenue (at Henry Street), Brooklyn, NY 11201. Telephone:e: 718-522-3794. Hours: 11:30 a.m.-3:00 a.m. Website: http://www.waterfrontalehouse.com/ The original Brooklyn beer bar. As with the Manhattan Waterfront, fine food in addition to a great beer selection, both on draft and in bottles.

The Blind Tiger Ale House, 281 Bleecker Street, 212-462-4682. Hours: 11:30 a.m-4:00 a.m, every day. Website: www.blindtiger.citysearch.com. Excellent selection, outstanding events, nice location across the street from John's pizza. Good luck finding a seat!

BXL Belgian Cafe, 125 West 43rd St. (between 6th and 7th Ave.) New York, NY 10036 212-768-0200. Website: http://bxlcafeny.skynetblogs.be/. Belgian-themed restaurant in midtown.

Burp Castle, 41 East 7th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues). Telephon: 212-982-4576. Hours: Friday-Saturday 4:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m., Sunday-Thursday 4:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. A huge mural of Belgian monks consuming vast amounts of beer, chamber music, and waiters dressed as monks. A pretty substantial bottle list, though some of the prices are ridiculous, even for Manhattan (anyone want to pay $50 for a 1994 Thomas Hardy?).

Scottish-themed bar and restaurant, with a good selection of draught beers emphasizing Scotland, a great selection of 75 bottled beers (with a Scottish and English emphasis, but including beers from around the world), and many Scotches, single malt and otherwise. The beer prices are more reasonable than you'd expect, given the neighborhood. The food is authentic enough to include haggis, if you've a mind to try it.

Apparently, they are still not open to the public at all times, so call ahead for hours. There is a smallish bar and a huge, open air beer garden with gigantic trees all over the place. All of the beers were in good condition and not expensive. They serve traditional Czech cuisine. No dogs allowed because of food and health codes.

Hours: Mon-Fri 12pm-4am, # Sat, Sun 10am-4am Very nice bar, with bar none, the best beer selection in Queens. This was the first real "beer bar" in the borough, and remains the best. I visited June 2009, and at that time they had 24 drafts, more than half of which were Belgian (and not Interbrew).

Staten Island

The draft list is small, and honestly, not very good; the claim to fame of the bar is the bottle list, which numbers over 200 (although not all of them are available at all times).

Killmeyer's Old Bavarian Inn, 4256 Arthur Kill Road, Staten Island, NY 10309. Telephone:e: 718-984-1202. http://www.killmeyers.com/ A wonderful old German restaurant with a beautiful old bar from the early 1800's, and excellent German food. Also a big outdoor beergarten, with live music Saturday and Friday nights, and Sunday afternoon during Oktoberfest season.The bar has an modest draft selection, and a huge list of about 115 bottles. The emphasis is on German beers (and with the atmospheric surroundings, what else would you want to drink?), but the bottled beer list covers the world .

Nurnberger Bierhaus, 817 Castleton Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10309. 718-816-7461. Atmospheric old-style German decorations and outdoor beer garden. Very good food. The bottle selection is okay, but the bottle list is very good, including some smaller German Breweries. Worth watching. An excellant addition to Staten Island's small list of top-drawer beer bars.

Upstate

They have a modest draft selection of 11 beers, which always includes some interesting stuff, such as La Trappe, but take a look at their wall of beer (a unique method of listing beers in stock), and you will see a bottle list of approximately 400 beers, including some hard to find anywhere else. Click here for draft list, but for this place, like many Belgian bars, the most important thing is the bottles. The owner and bartender, Larry Erenberg, who has built this place up for a quarter of a century, retired a few years ago, from all I hear, the new owners seem to be doing well.

A great, great bar in the hopping Baltimore beer scene, with over 70 taps, and usually quite a few good beers. I recently returned there in August of 2004 and was more impressed than ever.
